The Certified Electrical Workers of Washington, which represent 15,000 construction electricians in the state, has selected Sen. Steve Conway, D-South Tacoma, as its legislator of the year.
Conway earned the honor along with Reps. Mike Sells and Kristine Lytton.
Conway was selected because he prime sponsored and passed the organization’s priority legislation in both 2010 and 2011. In 2011, Conway sponsored Senate Bill 5662, which creates a preference for in-state construction work. In 2010, while a member of the House of Representatives, Conway sponsored House Bill 2555, which addressed the underground economy by authorizing L & I subpoena power to enforce production of information related to electricians and electrical installations.
This year Conway also sponsored SB 6133, which passed the Senate earlier this week and is scheduled for a hearing in the House on Wednesday. The bill is a safety measure which requires journeyman and specialty electricians to complete in-class education to receive a certificate of competency.
