OLYMPIA – Hannah Robertson of Olympia spent a week serving her state in the Senate Page Program. Each week selected students from across Washington come to Olympia to learn about the legislative process and help the Senate run smoothly. Pages carry mail between offices and relay messages to the Senate floor. Pages also attend Page School where they participate in mock hearings, write their own bills, and engage in debates.
“I wrote a bill that gave a $500 tax credit to stores that eliminate plastic bags and it ended up passing,” Robertson said. “I learned how to write a bill and how much power committees have.”
Robertson is a student at Tumwater High School and plans to study science in college. She enjoys bowling, tennis, and rock climbing. Page positions provide valuable civic and employment experiences for Washington youth. Additional information on becoming a Senate page is available at http://www.leg.wa.gov/Senate/Administration/PageProgram.
