Legislature passes Hatfield bill to aid local dredge efforts

OLYMPIA – Local rivers and streams will be restored and less vulnerable to flooding, thanks to legislation on its way to Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Senate Bill 6070, sponsored by Sen. Brian Hatfield, D-Raymond, will reinstate an exemption to fees relating to disposal of dredged materials from rivers.

“This is another great example of what we can do when we focus on helping local governments deal with local problems, and find local solutions,” Hatfield said.

SB 6070 will address dredged materials from a portion of the Cowlitz River and the Toutle and Coweeman rivers in Southwest Washington.

“This new law will facilitate the disposal of the sediments while enhancing flood control and public safety,” said Hatfield. “The sediment retention structure is full, the ash is back, and we need to be able to get rid of it.”

Local officials also lauded the passage of the bill, and the progress made in helping protect the region from floods.

“This issue has become much more complex than just extending the term date in the original bill that was passed out of the Senate,” said Cowlitz County Commission Chair George Raiter. “The Cowlitz County Commissioners would like to extend our thanks to the legislators, especially the 19th District delegation, who worked diligently on passing the bill.”

SB 6070 was passed by both the Senate and House and now needs only the governor’s signature to become law.

The 2009 Legislative session is scheduled to adjourn on April 26.
