Veterans, their families and the public attended a benefits fair hosted by Sen. Claudia Kauffman last Saturday in Auburn, and plans are underway for another event in March 2010.
Federal, state and local agencies answered questions and provided valuable information about health, education and other programs available to veterans. Participating agencies included:
- Washington Department of Veterans Affairs
- King County Veterans’ Program
- The Multi-Service Center
- Valley Cities Counseling
- Green River Community College Veterans
- Seattle Indian Health Board Veterans Program
- Census 2010
“It’s unfortunate that these brave men and women who have given so much for our country often don’t know what services and programs are available to them,” Kauffman said. “We have to change that.”
There are an estimated 640,000 veterans living in our state. During the 2009 legislative session, the legislature passed a bill which requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to study ways to increase veterans' access to state and federal assistance programs.
The department must submit a report to the legislature next year.
The King County Veterans’ Program is working with WorkSource to sponsor a Veterans Job Fair on Nov 10.
