I had two really good meetings this morning.
First, I met with the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce. In addition to providing a brief update on some of the work I’ve been doing to support small businesses in our area,
I spent most of the time soliciting ideas and concerns from the folks in attendance. I heard concerns about everything from the Business & Occupations tax to concerns regarding the availability of skilled workers. I expressed an interest in partnering with them – and with any citizens – who have ideas about how we can turn this economy around. I was grateful for the richness of today’s discussion.
Immediately thereafter I met with Dave LaRose, the South Kitsap School District superintendent. We had a good conversation about the state budget and about how the district has looked for innovative ways to handle budget reductions.
Dave also shared with me some impressive steps the district is taking to focus on the “whole child” including handling nutritional and health challenges that students face that are barriers to student learning. The district has put together a presentation on the Internet that details some of the interesting facts and figures related to the services the district provides and its critical role in the community.
I encourage folks to check it out.
