Sen. Ranker's floor speech on marriage equality, as referenced by Governor Gregoire in her signing speech.
OLYMPIA – Governor Gregoire signed landmark legislation today granting same-sex couples the right to marry. After the signing, Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-Orcas Island, released the following statement.
“For each of us, this legislation touches upon what we hold most dear – our sense of family and love.
“For many, including myself, this bill recognizes the conclusion of a decades-long journey. Today, we have taken a historic step toward extending the fundamental human rights and freedoms that we embrace in America to all of our citizens.
“My journey and my challenge was not based around how to accept gays and lesbians, but rather grappling with a society that would not.
“Growing up, I was taught that a family was not determined by the genders of the persons involved but by the love and commitment that they shared. I was taught that every person is to be treated with respect and dignity. By continuing to differentiate between types of loving relationships, we separate and isolate those within our communities.
“This legislation will provide thousands of families with the respect and dignity they deserve.
“I am thankful for the leadership of Sen. Murray and others who have worked tirelessly for years to bring us to this point, and to our governor for her commitment to human rights. I am honored to have the opportunity to stand up and be on the right side of history this session by strongly supporting marriage equality.
