Regala, ACLU to discuss eliminating death penalty

OLYMPIA - Sen. Debbie Regala, D-Tacoma, will join members of the American Civil Liberties Union at a press conference on 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, to discuss Senate Bill 6283. The bill will seek to reduce criminal justice expenses by eliminating the death penalty in favor of life incarceration.

Since 1981, Washington has sentenced 30 people to death; of those, five have been executed.

Regala believes that the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on death penalty cases would be more wisely spent on law enforcement and prevention programs.
