Here is a sneak peek of the bill signing with the governor:
I am proud to say my sex offender notification and registration bill (SONAR) was signed into law by Governor Gregoire.
With the help of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC), 33 counties are already online with the new system and more will be in the next few months.
SONAR will:
- allow counties and the Department of Corrections to directly input sex offender information into the database so that updated information is immediately available to counties across the state;
- allow counties to utilize the system on their website to provide public access to local sex offender information as authorized by statute; and
- provide a notification system allowing citizens to request and receive notification regarding sex offenders who move within a given proximity.
I believe SONAR will be a valuable tracking tool when an offender moves from one county to the next which will be a good safety tool for communities around the state.
